Amy was born in Scotland but orphaned at an early age and lived with her aunt who moved them to the fictional village of Leadworth, England. She first meets The Doctor in "The Eleventh Hour", the first episode of the 2010 series when she is aged seven. After her first meeting she is accidentally left waiting twelve years to see The Doctor again by which time she had adopted the name "Amy" instead of Amelia and found herself a boyfriend Rory who is a general nurse.She herself was working as a kissogram.

The Doctor then leaves her for another two years by mistake while giving the new TARDIS a test-drive, with the result that Amy joins the Doctor in his travels at the age of 21, the night before she is to be married (although The Doctor does not know about the engagement, Amy simply saying that she has to be back by the next day).
