Barbara was a History and English teacher at Coal Hill school when Susan was a pupil. She was very friendly with Ian Chesterton, and went with him to visit the Doctor, and got whisked off into Time and Space. She was always concerned about history, she tried to stop the Aztec practice of human sacrifices in the story, The Aztecs but was prevented by the Doctor.

In her final adventure, she and Ian left the Doctor and returned to Earth in The Chase using the Daleks time machine.

Jacqueline later returned to Doctor Who in 1980 with Tom Baker in Meglos as Preistess Lexa.
