Background

David Tennant comes on board as the 10th Doctor, after the 9th Doctor gave his life to absorb the energy of the time vortex which possessed his companion Rose at the end of ‘The Parting of the Ways’.

The story saw the end of the time war, an event that defined the previous incarnation. That event though still plays a significant part in this Doctor, but he’s managed to let go of the past more now knowing that there are no more Daleks in existence.

We see him behaving more socially towards Rose’s family, even being prepared to go round for Christmas dinner at the end of The Christmas Invasion, while taking the time to talk to greet everyone on his arrival in that particular story.

While he spent most of The Christmas Invasion in a pair of pyjamas and a dressing gown, he eventually settled on a new outfit at the end of the story. He selected a brown suit with blue pinstripes, scruffy shirt and tie, brown trousers and white plimsolls. He occasionally wears a long brown coat, which will complements the whole thing.

The first story for the new Doctor was a mini adventure set in the TARDIS, which was in between The Parting of the Ways and The Christmas Invasion, which was filmed for Children in Need. It establishes Rose’s uncertainty at the new Doctor along with their return to Earth.

The first full adventure is The Christmas Invasion, where the Sycorax try and invade the Earth over the festive period via a combination of killer Santa’s and a revolving Christmas tree.

Already his adventures will take him back to meet Cassandra and The Face of Boe from the 1st series, along with meeting Sarah Jane Smith, K9 and the Cybermen from the previous series. He will also come across some evil cat women, Queen Victoria, the Madame De Pompadour, the Abzorbaloff and creatures that can travel along airwaves of television broadcasts.

For David Tennant, who was confirmed as the new Doctor shortly after the departure of Christopher Eccleston.

Sadly, David Tennant announced he was leaving the show during the ITV Awards in October 2008, when he scooped his third award. From the ceremony, a broadcast speech was recorded at the Shakespeare Play, announcing in 2009 he is stepping down as the Doctor during the Christmas 2009 special. Huge disappointment in the world of fandom spread across, shortly after - with huge debates on who was the next Doctor, including speculation on Billie Piper or another female in the lead.

January 2009 his successor was announced..
