Background
Appearing from out of nowhere to pull Rose Tyler to safety from a crowd of advancing Autons, the Ninth Doctor was something of an action hero from the start. His beginnings, including the Eighth Doctor's regeneration, are neither seen nor explained, but it's likely the Eighth Doctor died during the Nestene war that is concluded in Rose, this Doctor apparently only seeing his new face for the first time in the mirror in Rose's flat (I wouldn't say the ears were that bad).

From the beginning het set out to teach Rose Tyler, inviting her inside his TARDIS, "by the way, did I mention it travels in time, too", taking her to the past, the future as well as exploring the present.

Different from most of predecessors, with his brutal haircut and battered leather jacket, he teaches Rose about the universe and she teaches him about humanity, together they enjoy and appreciate the wonder of life, and proves that anyone can be a hero, "other planets have a north too, you know."
Since being confirmed in the role in 20 March 2004, Christopher Eccleston promised to breathe a fresh breath of air into the programme; famed for being a gritty, dark northern actor, he was also keen to show off his comedic side, promising a Doctor Who that mixes all the necessary elements to great effect. His debut story, Rose, was watched by an average of 10 million people, peaking at 10.5 million, and this truly is a new Doctor Who for a new century, promising to terrify children for years to come.

Shortly after Rose was transmitted on BBC ONE, Christopher Eccleston announced he would be leaving the series to pursue other projects. After understandably being exhausted by an almost solid 8 month, 7 days a week, 14 hours a day filming schedule, and to avoid fears of being typecast, he decided to leave on a high after the fantastic reviews and reaction to the first episode of the new series. Together with Billie Piper, who will remain with the programme alongside the Tenth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston helped relaunch the series well and truly for a twenty first century audience, to great acclaim and well deserved praise. Whatever he does in the future, fans and non-fans alike can do no more than wish him the best of luck for the fantastic job he did in playing a part in ensuring that the legend of Doctor Who will remain in the hearts of children and adults alike for many years to come.
