Doctor Who to rent on Facebook

BBC Worldwide, the BBC's commercial arm, has announced plans to rent digitally remastered episodes of classic Doctor Who on Facebook.

Using the new Facebook Credits system, members of the social networking site will be able to visit the official Doctor Who page and stream a selection of nine stories from the history of the Time Lord, each containing several episodes.

The digitally remastered classics include 'Tomb of the Cybermen', along with modern day favourites such as 'Silence in the Library' and 'End of the World'. 'The Greatest Show in the Galaxy' will be exclusive to Facebook as it has never been released before on DVD.

The episodes will be available for Facebook users in Europe, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with rentals lasting for 48 hours.

Facebook Credits is a new system designed to provide a secure way for users to purchase content on the website. Credits can be bought within an app, or through the payments tab within the user account settings.

BBC Worldwide chief executive John Smith said: "As we have grown internationally, we've seen through our Facebook channel that fans who are loving the new series are asking for a guide into our rich Doctor Who back catalogue.

"Our approach to Facebook and other leading edge platforms is to be right there alongside them in fostering innovation. We see this service as a perfect way to give our fans what they want, as well as a great way for them to get their fix between now and the autumn when series six continues."

Facebook director of platform partnerships Christian Hernandez added: "Millions of people engage with their favourite TV shows on Facebook every day and we're now seeing broadcasters look at innovative ways to use Facebook tools to connect their fans with exclusive content. Through its Facebook page, BBC Worldwide is giving Doctor Who fans a quick and easy way to access these iconic episodes."

In January, BBC Worldwide launched a new channel on YouTube offering vintage video clips from Doctor Who, along with exclusive previews of forthcoming DVD releases.

Reign of Terror to to be animated

2|Entertain have announced that the missing episodes four and five of the William Hartnell adventure The Reign of Terror are to be animated as part of the forthcoming DVD, which the company previously reported would provisionally be released late 2012. The animators for the project are to be announced shortly.

The Invasion received a similar treatment back in 2006 when its missing episodes one and four were re-created by award-winning animators Cosgrove Hall.

The story is one of the remaining to have its surviving episodes released on DVD, leaving only those of the incomplete The Tenth Planet and The Ice Warriors still to be scheduled.
