Ian was a science master at Coal Hill School, he was intrigued to discover that one of his pupils, Susan, knew more about science than he would ever know. He was so intrigued that he followed her home and met the Doctor.

After two years with the Doctor, he and Barbara decided to return to Earth in an abandoned Dalek time capsule in The Chase.
