Lakertya is a peaceful, and primitive planet. There isn't much in the way of vegetation, most of the planet being rocky and mountainous, with large lakes.
The Rani planned to explode an asteroid of small matter. The atmosphere of Lakertya would have been filled with Helium-2, and the whole planet would have become a time manipulator.
The newly regenerated seventh Doctor, along with Mel, managed to thwart the Rani's plan, although some of the Rani's traps still remain.
