"We are wonderers in space and time " 1st Doctor 'An Unearthly Child'
The event opened with press call at the front the house. All eyes were on the collection of fan constructed Daleks when Colin Baker just walked through for a photo session. At one point a press photographer shouted at a little girl who had innocently wandered into his view.
Colin Baker witnessed this and the following exchange occured;
COLIN BAKER (pointing): What makes you special?
PHOTOGRAPHER: I'm press.
COLIN BAKER: Don't shout at members of the general public or they won't buy your newspaper.
PHOTOGRAPHER: It's a free newspaper.
COLIN BAKER (saterical tone of voice): Oh well if its free!
The little girl could have had her day ruined was actually saved by the Doctor himself. Sophie Aldred and John Leeson signed autographs in a small courtyard. Colin Baker signed autographs in the Orangery (consveratory to you and me).
The day was sunny and relaxed allowing everyone who wanted one to get an autograph without spending all day in a que. Although staff kept an eye on the VIPs there was no real need. People dressed as Cybermen and other monsters from the show were always about for photo opportunities.
I saw Andrew Beech there and I suspect he supplied the costumes. Longleat has a small permanent Doctor Who exhibition which is well worth a visit.
The last time I was at Longleat was in 1983 for the twentieth anniversary event. It was high time that I returned.
