The Mysterious Planet

Review from Trekdude

This Season highlighted the beginning of the end, the ratings had plummeted & soon we would be expecting a new Doctor.

This story is a nice example of what Robert Holmes is capable of after his poor scripts for the Two Doctors, he has certainly redeemed himself here. He utilised comedy, mystery, Science Fiction & melded them all into a nice story.

Holmes also made another perfect double act with Sabalom Glitz (perfectly acted by Tony Selby) & Dibber. The only annoyance in the whole story was the casting of Humker & Tandrell (the servants of the Immortal).

Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant where on top form this episode & Peri’s reaction to seeing Marble Arch was almost the same reaction to Rose when she saw the Earth destroyed in the year 5 Billion.

Joan Sims was a weird addition but it was nice to have such a familiar face on the show.

Sadly this was Robert Holmes last full story as he died during Part 13 only writing a few drafts.

Perhaps the Best Episode of the entire Season!

Notes

The Special Effects of the Tardis being dragged into the ship cost the BBC more than £8000.

Colin Baker and Nicola Bryant wanted to show how travelling together had made their characters less combative and argumentative.
