Two 2012 NTA Awards

Hurrah! Congratulations to Doctor Who stars Matt Smith and Karen Gillan who have both picked up National Television Awards for their starring roles in the show this evening.

Nominated in the Best Actress and Best Actor categories, the TARDIS twosome faced off some tough challenges from John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Martin Clunes and Surrane Jones to romp home to victory in a ceremony where the votes come from you the viewers. Meanwhile, Doctor Who itself missed out to ITV’s own drama juggernaut Downton Abbey for the Best Drama award.

Following their awards, the pair spoke to waiting reporters. Karen Gillan revealed that she had no regrets about leaving the TARDIS, while Matt Smith enthused that he had no plans to leave and wasn’t aware who his new companion would be.

These awards are a massive vindication for the series which had come in for some criticism during its 2011 run and was strangely bereft of awards at last year’s event. Clearly the game has been raised at BBC Wales!

Matt joins his predecessors David Tennant and Christopher Eccleston in winning the award, which is pretty cool and helps to back-up my own view that he is the best Doctor of the modern age, if not ever.

Eternity Clock first trailer

BBC Worldwide are pleased to announce that our console game Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock will launch globally, initially on PS3 and PS Vita via the PlayStation Network in March 2012 with a PC version due shortly after.

This is our first game-play trailer that showcases the monsters in the game. Players will be up against the most feared monsters from the Doctor Who Universe – the Cybermen, Daleks, Silurians and The Silence. Also attached here is the key art for the game.

In the game players will be able to take control of both the Doctor and River Song to unravel the mystery of The Eternity Clock in March 2012. The clock is ticking...

Huge series seven spoiler

Showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed at a press screening that Matt Smith's Time Lord will then be joined by "a new friend", who has yet to be cast.

"The final days of the Ponds are coming during the next series," he said. "I'm not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end... Then The Doctor will meet a new friend."

Moffat added that he believes River Song (Alex Kingston) will make a return appearance, though it is unknown if the character will be involved in the couple's exit storyline.

It has been announced on the official Doctor Who Twitter profile that more details will be revealed tomorrow (December 16).

Smith stated: "The show will miss the Ponds, brilliantly played by Karen and Arthur, but the great thing about Doctor Who is its ability to change.

"We had the most incredible journey. We took over the show and we've really had to hold hands and help each other through it.

"So it's very disappointing, but one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration, and that's what galvanizes it and pushes it forwards."

Gillan and Darvill both made their Doctor Who debut as Amy and Rory in the first episode of the show's fifth series in 2010.
