Synopsis

On a flying visit to Cardiff, the Doctor is reintroduced to a familiar face. Shortly after, the TARDIS spins out of control and its crew find themselves transported to the end of the universe. There they discover that the remnants of the human race are under threat from the savage Futurekind. Even the Doctor finds the situation rather disconcerting, but a committed science professor refuses to accept that his people are beyond help. Is he more than he seems?

Notes

  1. The Doctor remembers his encounter with the Slitheen at the rift when he was in his Ninth incarnation.
  2. The Doctor last saw Jack in The Parting of the Ways, when he was killed by the Daleks. Rose, having been possessed by the power of the time vortex, resurrected him but made him immortal, as was revealed in the Doctor Who spin off series Torchwood.
  3. The Doctor’s hand was severed shortly after his regeneration in The Christmas Invasion. It was revealed Jack had retrieved it in the Torchwood episode Everything Changes, and was used by him to detect the Doctor in End of Days.
  4. The Battle of Canary Warf, which took place in Army of Ghosts / Doomsday, resulted in the Doctor’s companion Rose being trapped in a parallel universe.
  5. The Master was last seen on television in Doctor Who, the 1996 television movie. In the following episode, The Sound of Drums, it is revealed he was resurrected to help fight the Time War, but fled and hid himself as a human.
  6. The Chameleon Ark was first seen in Human Nature / Family of Blood, where the Doctor used one to make himself human to hide from a group of alien hunters.
  7. Two audio clips of previous incarnations are heard shortly before Professor Yana opens the watch. The first is from The Dæmons and the second is from an unknown episode featuring Anthony Ainley.
  8. The Master’s comments about the Teletubbies are reminiscent of a similar scene in The Sea Devils, where he watches the Clangers.
  9. Saxon offers his wife a jellybaby, a common personality trait of the fourth Doctor, first seen in his debut story Robot.
  10. In his address to the British public, Saxon recalls the encounters with the Slitheen (Aliens of London / World War Three), the Sycorax (The Christmas Invasion) and the Rachnoss (The Runaway Bride).
  11. Professor Richard Lazarus’ aging process machine was first seen in The Lazarus Experiment.
  12. The agents monitoring Francine’s phone calls to Martha were first seen in 42.
  13. There is a flashback to Gallifrey, in which we see the Citadel and the Time Lords themselves. The costume designs for the Time Lords are similar, if not identical, to those seen in the classic series, most notably in The Deadly Assassin.
  14. The Utopia Project, and the last humans seeking it, were seen in Utopia, which also saw the return of the Master.
  15. The Master recalls some of his past encounters with the Doctor, namely with The Sea Devils and the Axons (The Claws of Axos) .
  16. The Doctor recalls being onboard the Titanic before (The End of the World) and reference is made to his involvement in Rose. Some mention was also made in The Invasion of Time.
  17. The Master demonstrated his unwillingness to die in The Deadly Assassin, The Keeper of Traken and Doctor Who the 1996 television movie.
