Review

After having attended a number of conventions there is always the concern that one is going to feel that one has heard it all before when listening to the stars from the classic series. This concern was soon dispelled thanks to skilled interviewers and enthusiastic guests.

Being a new convention everything felt somehow fresh and vibrant. The convention was on a smaller scale than some events boasting about three hundred and eighty attendees. This only improved the quality of the event by giving it a more relaxed and intimate feel. Having reserved a second row seat it allowed me to comfortably get close the small stage and the guests.

Saturday morning started with the Carole Ann Ford interview in which she perched on the chair arm so that she could be seen by every one in the conference hall. It seemed to me she would be more comfortable sitting in the chair properly but her enthusiasm over came any discomfort she may of experienced

The Anneke Wills interview followed next. Anneke Wills was equally enthusiastic and clearly happy to be there. It is to my great regret that I had to leave the main hall before the end of the interview to join the location tour.

The exterior location filming for the Unquiet Dead episode of the recent series were filmed in Swansea. Visiting the location added a greater dimension to the convention. Especially since it was used in such a recent story.

Event Organiser Cary Woodward was the tour guide. His Welsh accent really added to the flavour of the tour as he pointed to where the cameras were placed and where each scene was filmed.

The location itself consists of one street and demonstrates the clever use of any location used in a television drama.

The Sarah Sutton and Matthew Waterhouse panel was the first after Lunch. Immediately following this I attended my first 'Coffee Break With the Stars'. The stars on this occassion being Sarah Sutton and Matthew Waterhouse. The coffee breaks, for a £10 fee, allow a small group of fans to have an informal chat with a pairing of two Doctor Who stars. At half an hour it felt a little short.

The final panel of the day was the writers panel with Paul Cornell and Rob Shearman. Being the writers of episodes from the recent season of Doctor Who this was always going to offer new information.

Saturday evening I attended the celebrity buffet. A Welsh male choir was booked to sing for twenty minutes or so before the buffet started proper. It was intended to give us a flavour of Wales. It did.

The final addition to the evening was a turn by Scottish Comedian Charlie Ross. You always worry when you get some one that you haven't heard of before that you could be getting a raw deal. I am glad to say this was not the case. Charlie Ross is a talented comedian and a Doctor Who fan. I have a strange inkling that we Doctor Who fans could hearing more of him through maybe say Big Finish.

Sunday I attended my second 'Coffee Break with the Stars'. This time the stars were Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling. The coffee break had been moved forward by half an hour. Some of the fans who were meant to be attending the coffee break had not heard and as a result it became extended by approximately fifteen minutes. This extra time meant the coffee break was a more comfortable length allowing everyone to unwind a little. Another innovation was that each person who had attended recieved an autographed certificate. A nice touch.

The first afternoon panel was with Eve Myles, John Schwab and Alan Ruscoe. All cast members from the latest Doctor Who season. This new stuff was eagerly lapped up by the audience.

During this panel it was announced that the words "BAD WOLF" had appeared in large letters scratched in the sand of the beach near the hotel.

The panel of Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling demonstrated what an excellent double act they are. Even though we have heard the stories before you can't beat a live performance.

The panel consisting of Matthew Waterhouse, Philip Madoc, and Simon Williams allowed for a more eclectic subject range. Simon Williams demonstrated that he had no problem with people taking his photograph through out the panel, often stiking poses and facial expressions that would give each photographer an individual picture.

The final interview of the day was Sylvester McCoy. The word manic spring to mind. But manic in a good way.

For any convention it was well run but for a first convention I think it all went very well indeed. There will be another Regenerations convention next year and I intend to be there. With the experience the organisers have gained from this convention next years convention should great.

My final comment? If you attend only one convention in 2006 then attend the Regenerations convention.
