Review from Trekdude

Cyberwoman was a story focussing on Ianto and now Toshiko gets her turn in Greeks Bearing Gifts.  Tosh isn’t a terribly interesting character so the story does not work very well.

We are introduced into Victorian Times, when we see most likely seeing a prostitute being shot by a soldier little did he know she had been possessed. So the bullets have no effect and she pulls out his heart(not very pleasant).

Back to present day, Toshiko is in a club on her own (hardly surprising) until a young woman approaches her named Mary. Mary then finds out her address and we could say Tosh and Mary become friends (a bit of a relationship later on).  We then find out about her infatuation with Owen with pictures of him all over her fridge.

The great bit comes when she can read the mind of people and at first it is too much of a strain but when she keeps using it, she can fix on certain people’s minds starting in a club but when it goes to the town we are presented with some funny thoughts but when she hears the man who wants to murder his family, that’s when its starts to get interesting.

Later on, Jack finds out about it, confused and says to Tosh that ‘Not many people say out loud they want to kill someone’. And Tosh gave him an innocent reply.

And Toshiko preys on her friends/workmates thoughts and sadly finds out about Gwen and Owen’s relationship which makes her feel a bit depressed in a way that she wasn’t told. And, it is sad to see Ianto still in depression over the loss of Lisa. But, she cannot read Jack’s thoughts and hears nothing.

Toshiko and Mary fall in love, but it doesn’t give us an ‘aww’ feeling when we see she’s an alien, but it is beautiful CGI but slightly bland. And Mary demands access to Torchwood which obviously Toshiko allows, but Jack is one step ahead.

Mary is forced to kill Gwen unless her spaceship like thing is returned, so Jack gives it to her and sends her to her death which is perhaps a bit unfair; if he can keep a dangerous Weevil in a cell I think Mary isn’t as dangerous as that.

Conclusion - This story has its ups and downs but when writing a story about Toshiko it isn’t going to be spectacular. But, also has its moments and deserves a very respectable 3 out of 5.
